Graham Cook Memorial Sponsored Walk
The walkers at Widmerpool
Parking at the Village Hall in Keyworth we met the other of to-days walkers. At 10:00 sharp we set off through the center of Keyworth, heading south along the road. It was not long before Terry took us down a bridle path and into the countryside. It was cooler this morning than it had been recently, allowing Terry to set a pace that kept us nicely warm. The view over the yellow rape fields was slightly muted by a light mist.
As we enter Widmerpool I make a mental note to look up the details of that house for sale. A quick stop at the village sign for our group photo (try not to get run over!), and then its off again towards Stanton before returning to Keyworth in time for lunch.

Down to Earth Gardening Programme
The presenters of Down to Earth
Arriving a little before seven we find the Church Rooms already crowded with keen gardeners. We were asked to write down our questionsfor the panel, so that they could check for similar questions. By 7:30 all was ready, it was time for Dave Andrews to explain how the evening would unfold and for the two experts Ray Coombes and Jim Mackintosh to briefly introduce themselves. After a brief "practice" we start for real. Music, introduction, applause and into the first question, and before you know it "... and that is all we have time for", applause, music. And thats it, spot on thirty minutes and the programme was complete. So what I'll hear on Sunday morning will be exactly as it happened, albeit 10 days later! All that remains now is to polish off my ample ploughmans supper and glass of wine.

Swithland Hog Roast
The Hog!
A brilliant sunny Sunday boded well. It was obvious where the hall was from the row of parked cars, the Cancer Research UK banner and the array of friendly faces. We made our way to the bar, and, making the most of the weather, stayed outside to watch the butcher, Mr Boulton, roasting the hog. Apparently he had been at the hall since six that morning! At 1 we were ushered into the hall. In our turn we collected a plate of salad, then a quick trip to the butcher for the meat, and on our return potatoes had appeared at the table. The meal was excellent. We now waited our turn for sweets; the committee had been busy, there were sufficient sweets for seconds and even thirds! In all this grand afternoon out raised a staggering £850.
Many thanks to the organisers and helpers for making this such an enjoyable event, and special thanks to the butcher for nursing his hog for over seven hours!
The Wymeswold Carol Singers
We're just singers in ....!
This event has now become a Wymeswold Christmas tradition. A good crowd of singers and musicians walked around the village on Monday 15th December. As always the residents of Wymeswold were generous, helping to raise a grand total of £1295 for Cancer Research UK.

So easy when you're young!!
By 9:45 the car park of the "Staff of Life" was already fairly full with over 30 walkers preparing for the off. Lunch ordered, we snake across the field with Ticknall Church towering above the trees behind. The youngsters take the lead, whilst the more matured walkers take time to enjoy the views and to catch up on gossip. Several of the fields we pass through are p opulated with lambs; the lambing marquee has only just been dismantled. Over the hedgerows the oil seed rape has turned the fields into a riot of yellow, and I was sure that was a cuckoo in the distance. We join the main track into Calke and at the top of the rise the House comes into view. Over half way now, and soon time for lunch.

Quiz
The quiz raised £309.50, thanks to the work of Hilda, Pat and Ruth.
B&Q Collection
This had been a very worthwhile event with £475.15 raised over two days (an increase of £90 on last year). Sadly B&Q will no longer be supporting CRUK on a national basis.
Coffee Morning
The coffee morning held at Baxter Gate Baptist Church raised £129.56, with a good number of Christmas cards being sold as well.
Cake Stall
The cake stall raised a record £310.85 (up £90 on last year)
Wymeswold Carol Singers
The Wymeswold Carol Singers collected and donated £1,311 this year. They have been regular supporters of CRUK and over the years have donated in excess of £12,000. Their contribution is very much appreciated.
Two Choirs Concert
This had been a very enjoyable evening with a good, varied programme. The choirs were joined by Alexandra Gamble, a local soprano, who performed a number of accompanied songs. £255 net had been raised and the choir secretaries had intimated that they would like to put on another concert for us next year.
Coffee Morning
The coffee morning held at Baxtergate Baptist Church had raised £147 a worthwhile event.

Thank you for your donation of £250.00.

Thank you to Mark Allen and friends who raised £1425.00.
The Graham Cook Memorial Sponsored Walk
Despite only fifteen walkers taking part, including only five Friends, £628 was raised. Six local residents took part thanks to publicity in the local parish magazine.

Thank you for £475 raised from their Christmas raffle.
B&Q Collection
This has had been a very worthwhile event with £388.24 being raised over two days.
Irish Evening
Charity Buffet and Dance with Brendan Shine. Although ticket sales had not gone so well as last year this very enjoyable event helped raise £396.10.
Charity Fair
£155 was raised compared to £86 last year with a lot more people attending.
Cake Stall
On a bitterly cold morning £220 was raised with very little produce left.
